A high-quality ceramic can still fail early if the substrate is contaminated, flexible or incorrectly prepared; if the adhesive is outside its working window; if joints expose edges to the stream; or if cure and inspection are rushed. Installation details therefore belong in the technical selection, not only in a method statement issued after the material is ordered.

Adhesive-only, weldable and mechanically fastened systems each have limits. Orientation, tile mass, vibration, impact, temperature, moisture, chemicals, fire requirements, access and the consequences of release determine whether redundancy is required. The exact adhesive or grout grade, preparation standard, mix ratio, bond-line thickness, open time and cure criteria must come from current instructions for the selected system.

    Qualify the substrate

    Inspect soundness, repairs, stiffness, welds, geometry and contamination before defining preparation, attachment and allowable tile layout.

  2. 02

    Specify the complete attachment

    Name the adhesive or grout grade, surface standard, mixing, bond line, working window, mechanical retention, joints and edge details for the actual orientation.

  3. 03

    Control the installation environment

    Measure temperature, humidity and substrate condition; control batch size, open time, coverage and cure; protect the work from dust, water and premature loading.

  4. 04

    Inspect and retain records

    Use approved drawings, batch and environmental records, joint and edge checks, fastener verification, photographs and a release-to-service hold point.

    A generic adhesive label is not enough; use the current technical instructions for the exact selected grade and substrates.

    Wet, contaminated, corroded or moving substrates require correction or a specifically validated procedure before lining.

    Overhead, vibrating or consequence-critical locations may require mechanical redundancy in addition to bonding.

    Field cutting, drilling or welding can damage ceramic, elastomer or bond lines and must follow the approved construction procedure.

Practical answers

Questions before specifying the lining

Is adhesive-only fixing always sufficient?
No. Suitability depends on tile or panel mass, orientation, vibration, impact, temperature, moisture, substrate and the consequences of release. Mechanical or weldable retention may be required after review.
What surface preparation is required?
It must be specified for the substrate and exact attachment product. The procedure normally addresses removal of unsound material and contaminants, profile, cleanliness, dust, moisture, repairs and the time between preparation and bonding.
What should be checked before return to service?
Confirm cure criteria, coverage, joint and edge treatment, fasteners or weldable retainers, visible defects, loose parts, transitions, housekeeping and the approved release record.
How should a repair be prepared?
Identify why the original area failed before reproducing it. Remove unsound material, inspect the shell, define repair boundaries and edge geometry, confirm compatibility with retained material and document the repaired zone.
