This guide separates observed facts, engineering assumptions and data that still require confirmation. It does not promise a universal service life or replace the exact product data and project specification.
Preserve the evidence before removing the failed lining
Photograph the complete asset, the material path, the boundary between sound and damaged areas, individual joints and the back of any loose pieces. Mark orientation and location before cleaning. Record operating state and the event that exposed the damage. A repair started too early can erase the clues needed to distinguish wear, overload, poor support and attachment failure.
Face wear indicates that particles reached the working surface as expected
Uniform polishing or thinning along a stable path points toward sliding abrasion; localized smooth loss near a bend or direction change suggests erosion. Compare upstream and downstream zones and note whether joints are recessed or proud. Face wear alone does not prove a defective ceramic, and its rate cannot be judged without comparable duty and inspection history.
Fracture and edge chipping require a load-path review
Cracks beginning at a free edge, small unsupported cut or internal corner can reflect layout and support. A crushed zone at the first material strike can indicate concentrated impact. Repeated cracking across several tiles may follow shell flexing, vibration, thermal movement or restraint. Map crack direction and origin before attributing the pattern to material toughness.
Debonding or missing pieces must be examined from both sides
Adhesive remaining on steel but not ceramic, adhesive remaining on ceramic but not steel, cohesive tearing within the adhesive and corrosion beneath the bond line imply different causes. Review surface preparation, contamination, condensation, mixing, open time, thickness, cure conditions, overhead support and service chemistry against the exact installation procedure and product data.
Joint and transition attack often starts at a geometric discontinuity
Wide or aligned joints, exposed tile edges, abrupt changes in bore, gaps around penetrations and an unprotected termination can redirect particles into adhesive or steel. Once one piece is lost, neighbouring edges receive a new impact. Repair design should restore the flow path and transition detail, not merely fill the visible cavity.
The substrate can be the root cause even when the ceramic is damaged
Check steel thickness, corrosion, cracks, welds, distortion, stiffeners, vibration and movement at supports. Confirm that previous repairs did not create high spots or unsupported voids. The wear lining protects a surface; it does not replace the structural or pressure-containing function of the shell.
Close the analysis with a cause-and-action record
State observed damage, confirmed facts, plausible causes, evidence against each cause and the checks still required. Separate immediate containment from permanent correction. Define removal limits, substrate acceptance, replacement construction, installation controls and a new inspection baseline. Repair or replacement becomes credible when the action addresses the documented mechanism rather than only the symptom.
