Recognise that the attachment is usually the weak link
When a lining is removed after a premature failure, the informative question is what separated: if the ceramic is intact and the adhesive is still bonded to its back face, the ceramic never was the problem. Upgrading the grade after that kind of failure changes nothing. Retention method, surface preparation and substrate condition deserve the same engineering attention as the wear face itself.
Bonded retention suits accessible, stable, well-prepared steel
Adhesive spreads load over the whole tile back, adds no heat to the structure, needs no penetration of the shell and follows a wider range of geometry. Its performance is entirely governed by conditions you must control on site: surface cleanliness and profile, ambient temperature and humidity during application, mixing ratio, open time and an uninterrupted cure. Each of those is a hold point, not a recommendation.
Weldable formats buy redundancy where confidence in bonding is limited
A steel-capped or mechanically keyed tile is retained even if the bond line is compromised, which matters for overhead installation, vibrating structures, wet or humid conditions during the outage, and positions where a detached fragment would enter a crusher, a pump or a conveyor. The cost is a hot-work permit, heat input into the shell, a slower installation rate and a shell thick and sound enough to weld.
Mechanical retention is for planned replacement and thick sections
Bolted or clamped panels and segments are chosen where the lining is expected to be changed on a schedule, where the element is too thick or heavy to trust to adhesive alone, or where the shell cannot take heat. The trade-off is penetrations through the shell, fasteners exposed to the wear stream that themselves become consumables, and a sealing detail at every hole.
Let the outage and the site rules eliminate options before performance does
Ask four questions early: how many hours is the asset genuinely out of service, is hot work permitted at that location and at that time, can the surface be prepared to the standard the adhesive requires, and what are the ambient temperature and humidity during the window. A method that cannot be executed inside those limits is not a candidate, regardless of how well it suits the wear mechanism. Discovering this on site rather than at specification is the most expensive way to learn it.
Mixed retention within one asset is normal and often correct
A chute may justify weldable tiles at the impact zone where a detached element carries the highest consequence, bonded tiles over accessible sliding areas where installation speed matters, and a mechanically retained panel where scheduled replacement is planned. Record which method was used where, together with the as-built conditions, so a later failure can be diagnosed instead of guessed.
