Evidence-first editorial standard
This guide separates observed facts, engineering assumptions and data that still require confirmation. It does not promise a universal service life or replace the exact product data and project specification.
Define the failure before choosing a product
Photograph the worn area, mark the material trajectory and record whether the damage is uniform sliding wear, local impact, fine-particle erosion, corrosion, liner detachment or movement of the steel shell. More than one mechanism may be present, and the dominant mechanism can change between start-up, normal operation and upset conditions.
Capture the service data
Useful inputs include handled material, mineralogy where relevant, particle-size range, bulk density or solids concentration, velocity or throughput, drop height, impact angle, temperature, pressure, moisture, pH or chemicals, vibration, cleaning method, current liner and observed replacement interval. Add a dimensioned drawing and the time available for installation.
Match construction to duty
Rigid alumina tiles favour stable, supported surfaces with predominantly sliding abrasion. Hexagonal mats and curved segments follow contours. Rubber-ceramic panels can help where abrasion is combined with vibration or moderate impact, but they still need an impact and chemical-compatibility review. ZTA is considered for selected mixed impact-and-abrasion zones. Ceramic-lined pipe is designed around flow, pressure, bend geometry and joining details.
Design the attachment
Adhesive-only, weldable, interlocking and mechanically fastened systems have different limits. Surface preparation, condensation, open time, adhesive thickness, joint layout, overhead work, thermal expansion and edge protection all affect reliability. Use a named product data sheet and an installation procedure; do not infer temperature or chemical resistance from a generic label.
Validate the decision
Request the technical data for the exact grade and test method, confirm dimensions and tolerances, and agree inspection criteria. Where service history is uncertain, install a representative trial area and record operating hours, throughput and wear measurements. A documented trial is more useful than an unsupported promise of a fixed life multiplier.
