Ceramic-lined pipe specification checklist

The operating, mechanical and inspection data needed before ordering ceramic-lined pipe, elbows and fittings.

This guide separates observed facts, engineering assumptions and data that still require confirmation. It does not promise a universal service life or replace the exact product data and project specification.

Describe the conveyed material

State whether the duty is wet slurry or dry pneumatic transport, then provide particle-size distribution, particle hardness or mineralogy where relevant, solids concentration, carrier fluid or gas, moisture and any chemistry that can attack the ceramic, bond line, grout or steel shell. A product name alone is rarely enough because the same material can behave differently at another size or concentration.

Define the operating envelope

Record normal, minimum, maximum and upset flow; velocity if known; operating and design pressure; normal and peak temperature; start-stop frequency; cleaning method; and any pigging, flushing or steam-out requirement. Identify where previous pipes failed and whether the pattern was a smooth wall loss, localized elbow wear, joint attack or corrosion from the outside.

Issue mechanical drawings

Provide the line isometric or spool drawing, nominal diameter, schedule or wall thickness, overall and face-to-face dimensions, bend angle and radius, reducer orientation, branch geometry, flange standard and rating, weld-end preparation, support locations and allowable mass. The steel shell remains the pressure-containing and structural component; the ceramic lining does not replace piping-code design.

Agree the lining details

The proposal should name the ceramic grade, tile or sleeve construction, nominal thickness, joint and end details, attachment system and any transition between lined and unlined bore. Critical areas such as the outer radius of an elbow, branch intersection and injection point should be visible on the drawing. Tolerances must allow assembly without creating an exposed ceramic step.

Define quality and installation requirements

Agree material certificates or data sheets, dimensional inspection, visual acceptance, lining continuity checks, pressure testing of the steel assembly where applicable, marking, packaging and repair criteria. State whether field welding is allowed and how heat near the lining will be controlled. Expected service life should only be quoted when supported by comparable process data; otherwise define a baseline inspection interval and measure actual wear.
