How surface contamination and bondline control affect ceramic lining adhesion

A prepared surface can be contaminated again in minutes, while an uncontrolled bondline can leave voids or unsupported edges. Both conditions need traceable field controls.

Release the prepared substrate and ceramic bonding face immediately before use, then protect both from dust, oil, moisture and handling. Mix and place the approved adhesive within its current procedure, using controls that demonstrate full support and the specified bondline rather than judging by squeeze-out alone. Quarantine any area where preparation, timing, environment or coverage cannot be verified.

Verify both sides of the bonded interface

The steel may be visibly prepared while the ceramic back carries dust, release residue, condensation or contamination from storage and cutting. Conversely, clean ceramic cannot compensate for oily steel or soluble contamination left on the substrate. Define the accepted condition for both faces and inspect them under adequate light immediately before bonding. Use only cleaning methods compatible with the approved system. Gloves, rags and compressed air can themselves transfer contaminants if their condition is unknown. Keep prepared pieces off dirty floors and separate accepted material from units still awaiting cutting, cleaning or inspection.

Control the interval after surface preparation

Preparation is a condition at a point in time, not a permanent certificate. Dust from nearby work, airborne process residue, fingerprints, water, flash corrosion or an overnight temperature change can invalidate an earlier release. Record when the final preparation ended, when inspection occurred and when bonding began. Protect the work zone from incompatible activities and monitor the environment at the location of application, not only at the site office. If the permitted interval or conditions are exceeded, stop and follow the approved reinspection or repreparation route. Do not rely on the surface looking roughly the same in a photograph.

Understand what the bondline must support

The bondline transfers load between ceramic and substrate while accommodating the geometry and behaviour allowed by the selected system. Too little material can leave poor wetting or uncovered high points; uncontrolled excess can allow movement during placement, hide substrate deviations and alter the finished geometry. A visible perimeter bead proves only that material reached part of the edge. It does not demonstrate complete contact behind the unit. Establish the approved placement technique, target condition and verification method before production work. Trial placement on representative geometry can reveal whether tooling, access and installer sequence can achieve that condition consistently.

Make mixing and placement traceable

Use identified components, controlled proportions and mixing equipment allowed by the current procedure. Record batch identity, start time, environmental readings, work area and any interruption. Organize the crew so prepared adhesive is not extended beyond its permitted working condition while pieces are cut or access is rearranged. Apply a consistent method and periodically verify coverage using a project-approved check rather than waiting for the final row. If a unit is lifted for inspection, define whether it may be reset and how both faces must be treated. Improvised reuse can introduce partially cured material, contamination or a false impression of full support.

Preserve the interface when debonding is found

A detached piece offers rare evidence. Before cleaning it, photograph both fracture faces, orientation and exact location; note whether adhesive remains mainly on steel, ceramic, both surfaces or within its own thickness. Look for dust, corrosion, moisture marks, glossy uncontacted areas, voids and edge attack, but do not turn one appearance into a cause without supporting records. Compare neighbouring sound and suspect areas and review preparation, environment, batch and cure history. Keep representative samples where the project permits. Rebonding immediately may restore coverage, yet it can erase the distinction between contamination, poor wetting, cohesive failure, substrate movement and impact damage.
