Engineering answer in brief
Specify the construction constituent by constituent. Supply the full chemistry — concentration, pH range, temperature and any cleaning cycle — and require compatibility data for the adhesive, the grout and the sealing detail, not only for the ceramic.
Evidence boundary
Chemical compatibility is grade-specific and product-specific. This article sets out what to ask for; the limits themselves come from the data sheet of each constituent in the proposed construction.
A lining is four materials, and they do not share a chemical limit
The wear face is ceramic. Behind it sit an adhesive or bedding layer, a jointing compound between elements, and the steel shell. Each has its own resistance profile. Asking whether "ceramic" is compatible with a process fluid answers the easiest quarter of the question and leaves the three vulnerable parts undocumented.
This is why chemical-service failures so often look like a detachment rather than wear: the fluid reached the bond line through a joint, degraded it, and the intact ceramic simply came away. A harder ceramic would not have changed the outcome.
The joint is the path, so the joint is the design
Every joint between elements is a potential route to the substrate. In dry abrasive service an open joint costs wear life; in chemical service it can cost the whole lining. Joint width, filling method, chemical resistance of the filler and the treatment at edges and penetrations therefore carry more weight than the choice of wear face.
Mechanical fasteners deserve particular scrutiny here. Every bolt through the shell is a deliberate penetration of the barrier you are trying to build, and its sealing detail becomes a maintenance item rather than a one-time installation step.
Cleaning and passivation cycles are part of the duty
A lining is often specified against the normal process fluid and then destroyed by the cleaning regime. Caustic washes, acid descaling, steam and solvent flushes can each be more aggressive than the product the vessel handles, and they arrive at a different temperature. List them explicitly at the enquiry stage.
Frequency matters as much as severity. A monthly caustic cycle imposes a fatigue history on the joint that a single exposure does not, and the resulting damage accumulates at edges and transitions rather than across the face.
What to supply so the answer is defensible
The full chemistry with concentrations rather than a product name; the pH range including excursions; the operating and cleaning temperatures; the solids loading if the fluid is also abrasive; and whether the vessel sees pressure, vacuum or both. A recommendation built on "mildly acidic slurry" is not a recommendation.
Expect the reply to name limits per constituent. If a proposal states a single temperature or chemical limit for the whole construction without saying which element sets it, the weakest interface has not been identified.
Inspect the joints, not the face
In chemical service the useful inspection points are the joints, the edges, the penetrations and the transitions — the places where the barrier is interrupted. A face that still looks sound tells you very little if the grout has receded below it.
Record joint condition at each shutdown with dated photographs at fixed reference locations. Recession is progressive and comparable between inspections, which makes it one of the few early indicators available without stripping the lining.

Apply the reasoning to the right equipment
Application guides remain separate from product pages and explain the wear problem, the data to collect and design limits.
Verify the relevant product construction
Product pages own material format, construction and validation requirements. Use them after the application diagnosis, not as a substitute for it.
Continue in the relevant industry
Industry pages connect this engineering question to sector-specific equipment, process constraints and maintenance priorities.
